CAPA Update
by Diedre M. Wilton, CAPA Representative

Did you know June 17-23, 2001 was
"California Paralegal Week"? Did you know June 22, 2001 was "California Paralegal Day"?

On Saturday, June 23, 2001, the CAPA 25th Silver Anniversary 2001 - A Legal Odyssey was held in beautiful San Diego at the San Diego Mariott Mission Valley. As usual, everyone worked together and the conference was a huge success. (A huge THANK YOU goes out to FYI Discovery Services for providing the conference note pads for the third year in a row.) The seminars were interesting, the speakers were well prepared (although there is some debate over Peter Thompson's speech), and those who went on the night time zoo tour had a great time. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. The CAPA board wants to know what you think. We want the 14th Annual Educational Conference "Visions for Success" in Burlingame on June 22, 2002 to be even better.

On Sunday, June 24, 2001, the CAPA board of directors and representatives from each member association met for a short meeting.

Almost all of the member associations have been supportive of AB1761 and the ultimate passage of SB 6450. Some amendments were proposed but it was ultimately decided that none were necessary.

Your SJALA board members and board officers from each member association will be meeting November 3, 2001, for the CAPA Leadership Conference at the University of California Riverside. Suggested topics are:

  1. Delegating, Encouraging and Producing Results;
  2. Effective Marketing and Publicity;
  3. California and IRS regulations set the rhythm for non-profit entities; and
  4. Developing effective, creative & harmonious newsletters and communications.

If you are interested in joining the SJALA board, please contact me about attending this conference. Again, if you have any suggestions, please let me know. The CAPA board really wants to know what you think.

The CAPA Resource Directory has finally been copied (a huge THANK YOU goes out to Attorney's Diversified Services) and will be available at the Wednesday, September 19, 2001, SJALA membership meeting. If you are not able to attend the meeting, they will be available at all upcoming meetings, or you can make arrangements with me to pick it up at my office. Due to the size of the directory and the huge postage cost, we can't mail them.

Have you visited the CAPA website lately (caparalegal.org)? Our web master, Jon Montgomery, has been working diligently to keep it updated and make improvements. Again, if you have any suggestions, please let me know. The CAPA board really wants to know what you think.

Sincerely,

M. Diedre Wilton, SJALA Primary
