CAPA Update
by Diedre M. Wilton, CAPA Representative

On November 2, 2001, Charlene Bullock and I traveled to Riverside, California for CAPA's 3rd Annual Leadership Conference entitled "Leading the Band" on November 3, 2001 and the CAPA Meeting of the Board of Directors on November 4, 2001.

CAPA's 3rd Annual Leadership Conference

The leadership conference on November 3, 2001 was a day long conference designed for all of the board members of all of the member associations throughout California, as well as those persons interested in becoming board members.  Charlene and I represented SJALA and attended sessions on newsletters, communication, marketing, publicity, non-profit law, fund raising and basic leadership.  Every association sent one or two representatives except Sacramento Association of Legal Assistants.  In the next few weeks, we will be presenting what we learned to the SJALA executive board for approval and implementation.  Please let us know if you notice any changes.  The 4th Annual Leadership Conference on November 1, 2003, may be in the Fresno area.  Please give me your thoughts regarding SJALA hosting the conference.  Save the date - November 1, 2003.

CAPA Meeting of the Board of Directors

The meeting of the board of directors on November 4th was another day long event.  After approving the treasurer's report and proposed bylaw revisions, an audit committee was appointed which included myself, the outgoing CAPA treasurer, and the vice president of administration, who will be meeting in January 2002 to audit CAPA's books.  The 2002 elections were then held whereby our very own Stacey Hunt was elected CAPA President and yours truly was elected CAPA Treasurer.  We are looking forward to an exciting year.

CAPA board members and representatives from southern California associations participated in the annual State Bar Conference in Anaheim September 6-8, 2001.  The next state bar conference is October 10-13, 2002 in Monterey, and we will need volunteers to help with the CAPA booth.  If you are interested in working an hour or two, please let me know.  If you work the booth, you may be able to attend the conference free of charge.  I promise this will be an enriching experience.  This is your chance to represent SJALA at a state-wide event.  Save the date - October 10-13, 2002.

Carolyn Yellis, CAPA President, reported that 2001 was a great year for CAPA.  Business & Professions Code section 6450 was finally passed after a 10 year struggle and the Resource Directory finally became a reality.  SJALA can thank Attorney's Diversified Services for printing the Resource Directories for SJALA.  I want to personally thank Larry Kirlin, Manager of Attorney's Diversified Services, for taking on the job.  (The Resource Directory is a member benefit.  If you have not received your complementary directory, please make arrangements with me to pick it up at the December social on December 12, 2001.  In addition, MCLE forms are included with this issue.)  Save the date - December 12, 2001.

Noble & Associates presented a review of their insurance services, another members benefit to each and every one of you.  Currently, Noble & Associates insures over 200 members, providing cost effective medical and supplemental benefit programs, such as group medical programs, dental plans, high limit disability insurance and life insurance plans, vision care, prescription drug plans, professional liability and E&O policies, bonding and workers compensation programs.  They recommended additional programs to provide coverage for chiropractic care, hearing care, nurse hotline, counseling, physician referral network, cosmetic surgery, medfile, vitamins and wellness, and travel assistance.  I will let you know when these services become available.  Please let me know if you are interested in learning more about their services.  If there is a specific service that you would like, please let me know.

The CAPA board will be working with Taecan.com, Inc., who presented a proposal for internet delivery of mandatory paralegal continuing education as an additional benefit for all members.  This accredited internet program will be available soon on the CAPA website.  The cost is currently $25 but CAPA is trying to get a discount to $20.  (MCLE forms are included with this issue.)

The SJALA website is now connected to the CAPA website.  The CAPA webmaster, Jon Montgomery, has been working hard to connect all of the member associations.  Please look for a  MCLE page in the near future.  (MCLE forms are included with this issue.)

The 2002 CAPA Educational Conference will be June 22, 2002, in Burlingame.  If you are interested in participating as a vendor, please let me know as soon as possible.  Note pads for all participants of the 2001 conference were provided by FYI Discovery Services, and Attorney's Diversified Services has agreed to provide note pads for all participants of the 2002 conference.  Thank you FYI Discovery Services and Attorney's Diversified Services.  Courses may include intellectual property, licensing issues & the failure of the dot.com companies, probate & estate planning, ethics & compliance with B&P 6450, family law, advanced real estate litigation, a court room of the future, litigation (metadata) and administrative Law.  Flyers should be in the February issue of Recap. It will be a great weekend.  When making room reservations, please reserve only one room unless you are sure you will use more than one.  Save the date - JUNE 22, 2002.

California now has 528 CLA's; California ranks 4th behind Florida, Texas and Arizona.  If you are interested in taking the CLA or CAS exam, please contact Kathy Miller, CLA, CAS, CACPS 2001 Chair at KHMillerCLACAS@aol.com.

I will report again after the next CAPA board meeting to be held February 2-3, 2002.

Respectfully submitted,

M. Diedre Wilton
