The Birth of Paralegalism

Do you know what year the American Bar Association created the Standing Committee on Legal Assistants (SCOLA)?

In 1968 this committee was charted with developing, encouraging and increasing the training and utilization of nonlawyer assistants to enable lawyers to perform their professional tasks more efficiently. By 1972 the ABA House of Delegates requested the committee to develop standards for accreditation for formal educational programs directed to the training of legal paraprofessionals. The House of Delegates approved the Guidelines for the Approval of Legal Assistant Education Programs in 1973.

It wasn't until 2001 that Congress adopted a law regulating the minimum requirements for paralegals/legal assistants. Workshops are listed in this issue's Calendar which can help you to improve your skills and knowledge of the paralegal field.
