On
October 19, 2002, SJALA held its annual Fall Education Seminar.
This year it was a group effort, with the teaming of our neighboring paralegal
associations: Sequoia Paralegal Association of Visalia, and Kern County Paralegal
Association of Bakersfield. The event was held in Visalia at the College of the Sequoias. There was an exceptional group of
speakers who provided very masterful and valuable presentations. There was a morning
session on Estate Planning entitled "Covering Your Assets: Where There's a Will
There's a Way". The presenters were David L. Rauber, Esq. and James C. Johnson, Esq.,
CPA, in Visalia. An afternoon session on Family Law Matters was given by attorney Heather
J.C. Stanley, of the law firm Klein, DeNatale, Goldner, Cooper, Rosenlieb & Kimball in
Bakersfield. Everyone had the opportunity to attend a session on Internet Research led by
Rhonda Gregory, Paralegal and Instructor for the Fresno City College Paralegal Program.
And, last but not least, all attendees were provided a session on Legal Ethics which was
headed by a panel consisting of a judge, attorney, paralegal program director, and
paralegal/instructor: The Honorable James M. Petrucelli of the Fresno County Superior
Court; Anthony DeMaria, Esq., partner with the law
firm McCormick, Barstow, Sheppard, Wayte & Carruth in Fresno; Brian McCully, Esq.,
Director of the Fresno City College Paralegal Program; and Kay Kasic, CLA, CAS, Paralegal
and Instructor at Sonoma State University.
Those who attended this seminar were treated to the
sharing of a wealth of knowledge from these esteemed speakers, earned much-needed MCLE
credit, had a wonderful lunch and the opportunity to meet and visit with fellow
paralegals.
The following entities
generously provided services and products in sponsoring the seminar: College of the
Sequoias; Valley Document Solutions; Esquire Deposition Services; Appleby & Company,
Inc.; Café 225; Chain, Younger, Cohn & Stiles Law Offices; Arrache, Clark &
Potter, Attorneys at Law; Frito-Lay; Quest Discovery Services; and McCormick, Barstow,
Sheppard, Wayte & Carruth, Attorneys at Law.
Special thanks go to all the people
who worked on the seminar committee, including Carol O'Neil and Charlene Bullock of SJALA;
Gaye Stever, Wendy Culbreth and George Graham of SPA; and Lauri Chichester-Taylor and
Michelle Whittaker of KCPA.
The 2002 Fall Education Seminar was an exceptionally
professional and beneficial educational opportunity. If you were not able to make it to
this year's seminar, you will certainly want to attend next year.
